A classic dance between caregivers and kids with big behaviors is what I call “overdrive parenting” mode— and we have all been there— the instinct to respond to your child’s intense moments with equally intense responses.
Your kiddo’s behavior cranks up, and suddenly, so does yours. Maybe they start yelling, and next thing you know, you’re shouting right back. Or they dig their heels in, so you lock down too, reaching for whatever works—whether it’s warnings, threats, or power moves—to regain control.
And when the kiddo keeps amping up (because they can’t just “chill out” or step back on their own), it’s like the volume knob on both sides is stuck on full blast. Cue the spiral!
We’ve all been there, and let’s be honest, the aftermath can feel like running a marathon. The “Why did I go there again?” guilt, the frustration of watching this play out yet again, and the total energy drain—it all leaves you feeling isolated and stuck. Check out this short video The Danger of Over-Responding with Dr. Karyn Purvis
But here’s the cool part: we can break out of this cycle! And not only that, but it’s the best path to creating more connection and joy with our kids.
To help parents shift gears, I’ve got a few things that might help:
